"Winds howl. Rain pours down. Violent waves crash on to the shore and the storm surge causes flooding. The dangerous, spinning storm is a hurricane."
Did you know that something called natural disasters happen in different places all over the world? What are the different types of natural disasters?
By reading the book "Hurricanes!" by Gail Gibbons, you will learn about one of the types of natural disasters. This specific type is a POWERFUL storm that can toss school buses and boats around like toys! If you read this book, you can learn more about this real-life storm and you can even learn about what people should do if a hurricane occurs.
As a teacher, we can use this book (along with many other Gail Gibbons books)to give our students practice reading, while also letting them learn other subjects. This book specifically gives a science lesson and a language arts lesson. If you add in other topics while reading this, such as the hurricane scale and the math behind hurricanes (how high they can rise, how far they can travel), you just added math into the book as well. You could also talk of the different places hurricanes occur, which brings in social studies. This book can be used across a variety of subjects, if used correctly.
This book fits under the nonfiction category because it tells of true facts and is a real-life occurrence. This book also helps develop background knowledge, helps with future schooling (such as science lessons), addresses student's questions and interests, and it also is based on WHAT the children read (instead of only focusing on HOW much they read).
